Cogs & Sprockets

For Harry, who loves clockwork.

Dear Clockwork Enthusiasts,

If it wouldn’t be too much trouble, please give me an idea of what you would like to see more of on this blog.

  • jewelry?
  • steampunk?
  • pocket watches?
  • disassembled things?
  • specific watch brands?
  • more technical stuff?
  • something else entirely?

Answer this post, or send in an ask when you have time!

Thanks,

Elephant by Andrew Chase; 36” (91cm) X 36” (91cm) X 18” (46cm)

The elephant weighs about 110 lb and took about 100 hours to build. It is made out of auto transmission parts, electrical conduit, plumbing pipe and 20 gauge cold rolled steel. All the joints move and lock in place. Turning a gear on the elephant’s side winds a cable around a shaft which raises and lowers the fully articulated trunk. The ears also move back and forth and and fan out.

Making use of Caliber 849RSQ with a record-breaking 1.85 mm height and 128 parts, just considering the difficulty of making this movement into a skeletonized structure is mind-boggling and in itself an impressive accomplishment. Jaeger-LeCoultre rightfully called it a “steel labyrinth with two finely crafted faces.”

Bulova & Hamilton wrist watches

Many Bulova watches (circa 1955) have very attractive mechanisms (Swiss Ebauche), but their cases offered virtually no resistance against dirt nor moisture. Most cases were gold plated and were easily corroded when the plating wore off.
